Some thoughts on the Sunesis

tl;dr – Is this OP for K-space exploration and explorer-hunting? I feel like they’ve given too much value to covert ops cloak in balancing this ship for exploration. Perhaps limited supply is the only reason not to prefer this ship for those activites?

In response to

and the forums announcement on this interesting and attractive ship.

From the forum post:

The Sunesis is a new destroyer from the Society of Conscious Thought.
Like its big brother the Gnosis, the Sunesis does not require advanced skill training to fly and gets all its bonuses from fixed role bonuses. It also shares the Gnosis’ “jack of all trades” design philosophy, receiving bonuses to all major weapon types and being able to be tanked in any way desired.

Here are the work in progress stats as they stand today. We’ll be making tweaks as needed using your feedback and playtesting.

Sunesis
“The Sunesis-class SoCT Destroyer allows any acolyte to protect the investigations and secrets of the society.
Since it has very low skill requirements, any capsuleer can pilot it. It serves well in research and exploration but truly comes into its own in combat, with extremely fast align time.
This is a ship that shows its value when understanding the universe requires a strong hand as well as a sharp mind.”

Role Bonus:
25% bonus to Small Energy Turret, Small Hybrid Turret and Small Projectile Turret damage
25% bonus to Light Missile and Rocket damage
50% bonus to Drone hitpoints and damage
37.5% bonus to Core and Combat Scanner Probe strength

Slot layout: 4H, 4M, 4L; 3 turrets, 3 launchers
3 Rig Slots, 400 Calibration
Fittings: 63 PWG, 175 CPU
Defense (shields / armor / hull) : 800 / 800 / 800
Base shield resistances (EM/Therm/Kin/Exp): 27.5 / 27.5 / 27.5 / 27.5
Base armor resistances (EM/Therm/Kin/Exp): 32.5 / 32.5 / 32.5 / 32.5
Capacitor (amount / recharge rate / average cap per second) : 575 / 320 / 1.8
Mobility (max velocity / agility / mass / align time): 220 / 2 / 1,500,000 / 4.16s
Drones (bandwidth / bay): 20 / 40
Targeting (max targeting range / Scan Resolution / Max Locked targets): 35km / 550 / 6
Sensor strength: 10 Gravimetric
Signature radius: 65
Cargo capacity: 600

Cons:

  • No bonus to analyzers will gimp it pretty hard when it comes to NS-class data/relic sites.
  • No cloak is a big deal for Alpha Clones, but not as much issue for Omega clones. Can’t fit Covert Ops Cloaking Device at all.

Pros:

  • Grossly outclasses T1 exploration vessels when it comes to scanning. +/- 5 on analyzer strength is not that big a hit.
  • Grossly outclasses T2 exploration vessels like the Buzzard when it comes to both scanning and combat.
  • Lots of slots – can fit additional combat modules to gank explorers.
  • Beats Astero in Drone bonuses (20% vs 50, plus the HP) plus getting weapon bonuses when it comes to explorer-hunting.
  • Stupid-high cargo space
  • Super versatile – means it is hard to know what you’re about to fight.

I’m really only qualified to comment on this from an exploration vessel perspective, but it feels over-powered. Yes, we’re talking destroyer vs frigate class, but the investment required for a T2 or an Astero should get you more than access to WH space. Lack of a covert ops cloak is not a huge deal in HS/LS/NS exploration – nice, but not 100% essential, since local already tell you someone’s in-system. I feel like this would be afar superior vessel for K-Space exploration (HS/LS for sure) and explorer-hunting than anything else out there, and that feels wrong.

Lack of analyzer bonuses will make NS-class data/relic sites harder, but the ROI is so high that losing a few cans because you’re unlucky is not that bad. The +5 is helpful, but it’s pretty rare that +5 would have made the difference when I was doing NS/WH exploration in a Heron. The scanner strength is high that scanning may be enough faster that it’s a net gain even with a few cans lost.

What am I missing, other than the fact that when it’s gone, it’s gone, and you have to go scrounge one up from someone’s alt inventory. Perhaps that’s enough, and I need to plan on stocking up.?
